COCCIDIOSIS

Coccidiosis is one the most common parasitic disease in poultry.

It is a caused by protozoa located mainly in the small intestine of poultry or in the caecum (first part of the colon).

Observations:

  • Presence of legs sores due to demineralization.
  • Abnormal and uncertain gait.
  • “Droopy” wings.
  • Pale crest and anorexia.
  • Bloody droppings.
  • Wet litter.
  • Progressive or rapid weight loss in poultry.
  • Important mortality increases.

NECROTIC ENTERITIS

Necrotic Enteritis is a sporadic, non-contagious infection caused by a bacterium, Clostridium perfringens, which produces toxins causing damage to the intestines (necrosis).

Causes:

Subclinical coccidiosis (silent) caused by a resistance to certain antioccidials (vaccines, ionophore, etc.)

Bacteria normally found in the soil, dust, droppings and bedding. It is also found in the intestines of hens and turkeys. The disease occurs when there is an imbalance in intestinal flora or damage to the mucosa. Highly contaminated food or litter can also be involved in an outbreak. Flies can act as a mechanical vector which can result in high mortality rates.
